CRI gave a presentation at the DAKOFA/ISWA Conference on waste related climate issues
The Danish association of waste organisations (DAKOFA) together with the International Solid Waste Association (ISWA) organised an international conference on 3-4 December 2009 on waste related climate issues
The Director of CRI, Birgit Munck-Kampmann, was invited to be a keynote speaker on behalf of the ETC/SCP in one of the conference sessions titled “life cycle thinking to acting”. Birgit, in collaboration with the scientific committee, decided to present the results of an on-going ETC/SCP project on municipal solid waste (MSW) management and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
The presentation was titled “Municipal Waste Management-Substantial potential for reducing greenhouse gas emissions”. The European and national policies during the last decade have significantly improved the waste management system in all EU countries. This development has an effect on the GHG emissions associated to MSW system across the EU. According to ETC/SCP calculations, an improvement of the MSW management practices has an added value for GHG emissions reduction. In fact, this reduction can significantly help the countries in their effort to meet the GHG emission reduction targets set by the Kyoto protocol or EU internally. The presentation was also supported by a short paper which was distributed to all participants.
Generally, the conference succeeded in combining expert knowledge from all around the world, high participation (220 attendants) and a comprehensive coverage of GHG emissions issues associated with various waste activities.
