Birgit has been the Institute’s Director since 2000. In her capacity as Manager of European Topic Centres on Waste & Material Flows and Waste & Resource Management, she has gained a considerable knowledge about European environmental policies. Today, she is the Manager of ETC/SCP. 

Birgit has worked as deputy Head of Division in the Danish EPA, in the department for Strategic Environmental Planning, monitoring and indicators from 1996-2000 and earlier she has worked at the Danish Water Quality Institute, Rambøll & Hannemann and the Ministry of the Environment. Furthermore, Birgit has worked as lecturer in Economics at the Technical University of Denmark and the Copenhagen Business School. 

During her employment as consultant she was assigned to environmental projects overseas, including the Far East, Africa and East & Central Europe, either as a project team member or as project manager. Her tasks included the setting up of environmental monitoring systems and training courses for civil servants in environmental administration.

Birgit holds BA in Business Administration and a MSc in Economics from the Copenhagen Business School. 

Birgit is a Danish national.
