Waste Statistics Regulation
NACE

According to the Waste Statistics Regulation data has to be collected on generation of waste from 20 economic activities and from 3 different waste treatment facilities.

The Waste Statistics Regulation sets out the list of waste categories for which data have must be produced. The waste categories are from the so-called European Waste Catalogue prepared for the Waste Statistics Regulation 3rd version (EWC-STAT Rev. 3). The waste categories are spilt into 48 categories.

For these 48 waste categories, the wastes are reported according to 20 different economic activities (NACE). Some of the waste types can be generated only by a small number of activities or by specific activities, while others are generated by nearly all production and consumption activities.

There is a distinction between the following five types:

  1. Focused production waste: EWC-STAT codes restricted to a small number of production sources or economic activities.
  2. Widespread production wastes: EWC–STAT codes which are not specific and can appear in almost all sectors of production.
  3. Focused production wastes which also occur on a widespread basis as consumption waste: EWC-STAT codes which are generated not only by a small number of production sectors but also be a small number of production sectors but also by households.
  4. Widespread consumption wastes: ECW-STAT codes which are not only generated by households but are also widespread among business activities.
  5. Waste treatment wastes: ECW-STAT codes which are generated predominantly by waste treatment facilities.
