A success story for good cooperation and a shared information system on waste in Denmark

Denmark has developed a single waste data collection system for multi-purposes. The system is used as basis for generation of annual statistics, State of Environment Reports, for the annual publication on waste statistics, and for reporting according to the Waste Statistics Regulation. There is only one institution in Denmark who is responsible for collection and submitting of waste data, the Environment Protection Agency (EPA). The National Statistical Office is not working with waste data but use the data collected from the EPA to the Statistical yearbook, prepared by the National Statistical Office.

Since 1993 has Denmark produced annual waste statistics based on the figures collected through the Danish ISAG system (Information System for Waste and Recycling). The ISAG is based on statutory registration and reporting from Danish waste-treatment plants for all waste entering or leaving the plants. Information concerning waste is reported annually to the Danish Environmental Protection Agency, and is the basis for the annual publication on waste statistics.
